Not receiving notifications

Not getting notifications when you should be? Here are a few things you can try to get your Kik notifications working again:

General troubleshooting for Android users:

Please note: the exact steps as well as names of settings for these troubleshooting tips may vary depending on your device model.

    • From your device, force-close the app and reopen it (swipe it from your Recents list).
    • From your device, force-stop the app and reopen it (from your device go to Settings > Apps > All apps > Kik).
    • Restart your device.
    • Update your Kik app to the latest version.
    • Update the software (OS) on your device.
    • Reinstall the Kik app on your device.

Check Your In-App Notification Settings (Android users):

NOTE: If you're using a device on Android Oreo (8.x) or greater, you may need to update your system settings to receive notifications properly. For Android Nougat (7.x) and lower, you can change all of your notifications for Kik right in the app.

    1. Open the Kik app.
    2. Tap the profile icon in the top right-hand corner.
    3. Tap Notifications.
    4. Tap In-app Alerts.
    5. Toggle on Show Notifications

Also, check your OS settings to see if any advanced notification settings may be blocking notifications for Kik (like Do Not Disturb mode).

Check Your Connection:

    • Confirm that Airplane Mode is not enabled. You can disable this in your OS settings by going to Network & Internet settings and toggling OFF Airplane Mode.
    • Switch to another Wi-Fi connection to see if you begin receiving notifications.
    • Switch to using your data plan if a Wi-Fi connection isn’t working.

If you're not receiving notifications while on a data connection, it may be due to a feature called Data Saver. In your OS settings, go to Network & Internet settings to see if Data Saver is enabled. If it's on and Kik isn't whitelisted, you may not receive notifications until you open the app again.

To whitelist Kik, follow these instructions:

    1. From your device, open your OS Settings.
    2. Tap Network & Internet.
    3. Tap Data Saver.
    4. If you have Use Data Saver toggled ON go to Unrestricted Data.
    5. Scroll down until you see the Kik app and tap the toggle to the right to whitelist Kik.

This option enables background data usage for the Kik app so please keep in mind that this may increase your data use while Kik is running in the background.

Battery Settings

The Battery Optimization setting may also have an effect on your notifications as it slows down app activity when Kik is running in the background. To exclude Kik from battery optimization, follow these instructions:

    1. From your device, open your OS Settings.
    2. Tap Battery.
    3. Go to Battery Usage.
    4. Tap the Kik app
    5. Select Unrestricted to allow background battery usage.

Here are some other tips to consider:

    • On some devices, you can add Kik to the Unmonitored Apps list.
    • Check to see if Kik is set to be an Always Sleeping app and remove it from that list.
    • If you're on a Samsung device, check out this article for more information.
